Is it ok to pick out baby names 10 years in advance? Or to make a list that you like?

Of course not! I've always had names in the back of my mind. Just be aware that your significant other may not like your names so try not to get your heart set on them.

I have had a list of baby names since I was an a pre teen. I am now in my mid 20's and have two kids which none of the names I picked out are theirs! And to this day I still have a habit of jotting down names for a future child if I have one!

Its fine to keep a list of names you like...my best friend and I did it since Middle School (we wrote stories together and used the names in them too).

We both have kids now...and neither of us used the names from 15 years ago (the top pick then was Melanie for her and Zoey for me).

So it if fine to keep a list but when naming a baby it is something you do together with your mate and I ended up picking names that had family ties along with a name we both liked.

absolutely. my bf and i aren't planning on having kids til about 8-10 years from now and we already have 2 boys and 2 girls names picked out. i had a list of names i liked when i was in elementary school. just because you want to pick names now doesn't mean you have to start having kids. it's healthy and normal to pick names out far in advance. some may stick around til you have a kid and other names may not be as exciting as you once thought. but think of it this way....if you pick some names out now and 10 years from now name the kids those same names....it's a sure bet that you'll always like the name and never think "why the hell did i name my kid that?!?!"

There is nothing wrong with picking out names in advance ! Its funny but as your family and friends around you start having kids you end up crossing a few names off your list as they pick them. I have thought of names ever since I was a teenager !

Sure! I always do that! If I think of names now that I like, I jot them down somewhere, so if I ever need them, I'll remember what I had in mind. It's good, too, because names that are popular that you like now may not be as common anymore 10 years down the line. There will be a whole new set of popular names, and you could always use one that you like now in the future. Also, as trends change, you may forget about the ones you like now in the future, so it's nice to have your own little list as a reminder.

It is perfectly okay to make a list of names you like. Just don't be surprised if you change your mind and don't like anything on the list when you do have children. I think its always fun to plan things out how you would want them to be. About 5 years ago I really like the names Hannah Mae and Olivia Mavis. Both of those first names are really popular now so I wouldn't use them, and my husband doesn't like either one. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

I was picking out kids names when I started naming my first dolls and kittens. It's natural. Use your creativity and your imagination and go wild!!! I had a name for a girl picked out at 15 from the author of a cheesy western novel that my Dad was reading. The author's name was Jessamine and I turned it into Jessalyn. It's a name that I've rarely heard used in real life. I think it's beautiful. I've even got my husband liking it, if and when we ever decide to have kids.

I think it's normal. although when I did become pregnant I didn't go with not a single name from years ago that I had thought of. But keep a list and see how your names change from now until then, it'll be cool to look at later in life.

Nothing wrong with making a list. It's sort of like imagining your wedding or dream date. I suggest keeping your list on your computer though. It is easier to revise.

You can also use your list for your pets. When I was 13, my favorite name was Andrew. That is how my first little feathered buddy got his name.
