According to Wikipedia, our occupation of Japan lasted until 1952 or about seven years after the end of the war. On May 23, 1949, about four years after the end of the war, we turned Germany back over to the Germans. We still have a military presence in both nations.

Thank you for your interesting and thought-provoking question! Most Americans today don't have a historical perspective on the importance of WWII and its aftermath to the world today. In answer to your question, we stayed long enough to make them into our allies so that we were confident that we would never have to go to war against them ever again.
It is sickening to me to hear people today talking about American 'world domination' and/or 'colonialism'. If domination means turning your two biggest enemies into the forth and fifth largest economies in the world, free, independent, peace-loving, contributing members of the world community; I should think the number of other countries who would volunteer to experience such 'domination' would be quite large.
Our attempts to help Iraq enter that club of peaceful and prosperous nations will be seen more beneficently by history than by so many of today’s ignorant, vile critics, regardless of the outcome in the short-term.

It changes all the time. At least 30, 000 to each base and there are 100s of bases all over the world.

We STILL are! Consider world populations then and now!
50,000 then is like 500,000 now!
Also consider we have 130,000 troops in a country of 40 Million.
Mexico has 10,000,000 in our country!
Who is occupying who?
