Make sure you keep the litter box clean. They don't like to get in a dirty litterbox. Also, make sure the litterbox is in a private area. They like a little privacy just like we do.
Since he is only 4 months old, he is probably still in the learning phase. Some cats take a little longer to get trained. After he eats or has a drink of water, carry him over to the litterbox and gently place him inside. He will eventually get the hang of it.

put a small litter box in the bedroom and move it closer and closer to the other litter box everday. It could just be that the kitten is looking for attention.

my cats i have been given even as they were small, and thats once you should do some thing about it, the longer you wait, the more suitable sturdy it's going to be to teach. some good events, are to praise him even as he is going in the clutter field, and (no longer hitting) tell him of even as he does it in a room, by using bringing him to his poop, and in a scolding voice say NO undesirable cat! firmly. (it does help), virtually, in case you're making it unpleasent for him to poop on the floor, he wont like it. also sparkling the field fequently. good success (and be affected human being with him/her)

try the cat section on here. not sure if the newborn and baby (human) part is going to help you any. usually newborns and babies don't go in a litter box either. or at least they shouldn't.
