While Moller has an interesting looking vertical take off and landing (VTOL) design, it's far from practical. For one, the FAA (federal avionics administration) needs to adopt new plans, infrastructure, etc... to deal with that type of craft. Secondly, it's not very practical for driving to the lift off area.
My neighbor is building this design. http://www.labicheaerospace.com
I've asked every question I can think of to look for faults in the design and it simply makes sense. There is nothing mysterious about it and it will use the pre-existing infrastructure the FAA currently uses. So nothing new has to be made, no special materials have to exist....it's just a matter of using off the shelf parts and some good design that's already been done. I'm helping when I get the chance, and that hasn't been to often.
As for cities in the clouds...not much reason to live there. Much more practical to live underground (free climate control for one, using less energy, costing you less, polluting less) not to mention you can use the land above you for whatever you'd like. Makes your yard much bigger if your house doesn't occupy the space.
feel free to write me via my profile if you'd like to ask me more detailed questions about the FSC-1.

Yes of course to both. What year? Well could be this year for flying cars or when we learn that the other major force in the universe is magnetic energy. The Earth has a field which protects us from the harmful emissions from the Sun. Flying cars, when they are released on the market will be safer then road cars because they will function using magnetic fields piloted by computer. Accidents will not occur because the on board computer will use the magnetics to nudge vehicles off collision courses. All the roads on the Earths surface will be reclaimed for housing or returned to natural habitat. So we will not require the suspended cities for some time yet. However I think that we will build cities in space inside large asteroids with spin (like in EON by Greg Bear) When will it all be? Economics, multiplied by, politics, divided by, will. Equals ??/??/???? It could even be tomorrow if enough people were to go to Area 51 and other places of interest relating to the UFO thing, and surely if the popular media were there to they could not kill too many...

flying cars do exist right now but the cities in the clouds is much farther off, maybe another 20 or 30 years for the cloud cities but if you got the cash you can buy a Moller Sky Car from this link.

Are you crazy? Most people can't even drive cars without running into things. How the heck are they going to fly cars while shaving, putting on makeup, playing with the radio and yapping on their cell phones without killing millions?
