I know that it won't work with the Japanese ATMs, obviously, but can I still purchase stuff with it?

I'm not referring to a credit card, I'm talking about a check card with a Visa logo. In the states, I can use it like a credit card. Except, it automatically deducts money from my checking account.

Hotwad is right - I have a UK debit card, and I use it with the ATMs in the post offices here in Japan frequently! One word of warning though - in addition to hotwad's warning to notify your bank of your intentions to use the card in Japan - there are ATMs ALL over the place, but the only ones that ALWAYS accept foreign debit / credit cards are the ones in the post offices! (The others usually only accept Japanese bank cards.) The ones in the post office DO close at night, but are often open even when the post office itself is shut. You can tell from a distance just by looking for the metal shutters! You can touch the screen for English instructions too - unfortunately you get a psychotic voice-over at the same time, but at least it works..!
; )

When you notify your bank, don't forget to double-check with them that your card CAN be used outside your own country! It's unlikely that there would be a problem, but it never hurts to ASK!

As to your other point, you may as well forget trying to use it as a credit card in shops etc. Hardly any Japanese shops outside of tourist areas will accept a foreign credit card - and many Japanese people hardly ever use their credit cards - they prefer using cash, and shopkeepers generally prefer taking cash. (Even the shops IN tourist areas won't ALL be willing to accept your card - regardless of whether it's a credit or a debit card!)

Yeah, you can use the debit function, just not for purchases. I withdrew cash numerous times from post office ATMs all over Japan. Just be sure and call both Visa and your bank that you're going to use the card overseas. They'll make provisions not to suddenly lock your account out for what looks like possible unauthorized purchases.

If your Bank check card only can be used as a debit card, no, you can't use it here in Japan, because it cannot connect directly to your bank. If it can also be used as a credit card, sure, not problem.

In most places you can use the credit function not the debit. As long as they take Visa. I use mine often and have only had a problem once or twice.
