Darn good possibility. The toe isn't known for taking a good smacking from above.
I guess it depends on what you dropped. I would say it probably is a painful contusion but you can never be sure without an X-Ray.
Get it checked out. There really isn't anything they can do for it though. They'll tell you to take it easy and wear tennis shoes, ice it, elevate it and take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen.

You need to get to a doctor and have him perform an X-ray. This will be the primary method of finding out if it is broken. In the meantime wrap some ice in a towel an put the compress on your toe. This is the best way to help with the swelling. This will hurt at first but keep the ice towel on that toe. Do not put anything warm or hot on that toe this will only cause more damage. Good luck and get that toe to the doc

I ran into a big oak chest and broke my toe really badly a couple years ago, it was bent sideways at a right angle, and all I did was tape it to my other toe so it was straight and take some ib profin. After a couple weeks I was able to start hobbling around again and shortly after that my toe was back to normal.
So basically weather your toe is broken or not doesnt make much of a difference. Just stay off of it until it stops hurting.

Probable. You can't really cast a toe though. Take some ibuprofen, ice it, elevate it, and stay off of it as much as possible. Good luck.
