You have pushed a button for me. I can't stand affirmative action. It is definitely creating and promoting racism. If a person, whatever their race, is more qualified for a position, they should get the job, the spot at the school or whatever. If someone is getting something simply because they are of a certain race or gender, then they are in agreement that they are inferior. Earn it by merit...not because of race!

Affirmative Action definitely needs to be updated. There are a lot of pros and cons to it. The problems lie in the fact that a lot of good people are overlooked for promotions because affirmative action dictates that a minority needs to be promoted instead regardless of qualifications. Although it brings diversity to the workplace, it also ensures that the best person for the job is not always the one chosen. The program created to help combat racism and segregation creates a discrimination against caucasian males because females, caucasian or not are considered a minority. It's a catch-22, two steps forward and two steps back.

Affirmative action can be useful to diversify a workforce or a student body. In most cases, the law recognizes this as acceptable as long as no racial quotas are used. However, when taken to the extreme, it is nothing more than racial discrimination. Basically what I am saying is if affirmative action is used to decide which candidates get a promotion, job, etc. between fairly equally qualified candidates, it seems fine. However, if less qualified candidates are being advanced to meet a racial quota, this is discrimination.

Affirmative action is just another flavor of racism. "People should be judged, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character"..Dr. King didn't say that to sound pretty, he damn well meant it. If multiple people are applying for a job, the most qualified candidate should get the job because of their skills in that area, not because they have more or less melanin. Racism is antiquated and ignorant, and it's the 21st Century for fark's sake..

Affirmative actions as far as I know came from Ronald Reagan, and that theme was for the Bureaucrats and had nothing to do with the Politicians. When you know that something is good and will serve, deal with it.

As for the rest of the question... I do not need to go further as it is already answered above.

Affirmative action is discrimination. It only serves to fan the flames of racial inequality and helps to create unnecessary stigmas for those who would have succeeded on their own, regardless of the favoritism that affirmative action provides.

I completely believe in affirmative action. And when it is implemented in the classroom so that all children enter the job market in a competitve way so that there is no need for it's current form... perhaps I'll support it as well.

They do a lot more harm than good. Because of these programs, when people see a member of 1 of the "preferred" groups succeed, many assume that it is do to affirmative action rather than merit. They send the message to members of these groups that they can't be expected to meet the same standards as others. That decreases both their motivation & their self esteem. It's lose-lose.

I believe this policy was useful a generation ago. However, it does cause reverse discrimination from time to time.

I think it's about time to curtail it.

Let's end the race boxes on job applications. We're Americans. Not hyphenated Americans, but Americans.
