In doing a homework assignment.The problem says ''find the amount of material needed to make a box for each prism''. below that question it has a rectangular prism with the dimensions 3*5*1 or 3 by 5 by 1. I dont understand what they want me to do. Find the surface area or volume I dont know. Can you tell me how to do this problem. (the problem they want me to solve is in the parantheses in the top part of paragraph. Thanks

they want the surface area. if the dimensions are 3*5*1, and the formula for SA is 2Lw + 2wh + 2hL. so, say that L = 3, W = 5, and H = 1, then:
SA = 2*3*5 + 2*5*1 + 2*3*1 = 30 + 10 + 6 = 46 square inches/centimeters/units squared of whatever material used

This looks like a surface area problem:
A = 2(3*5 + 5*1 + 1*3)

They want you to solve for the surface area. A box is hollow. Read the instructions above and earlier in the section though, as some books define boxes as having no tops others as including the tops, if not specified, it usually includes the top.
