Nepal to me is synonymous to Mt. Everest. Filipinos who conquered Mt. Everest started it out in Nepal.
It is unfortunate that this beautiful country is experiencing a tug-of-war between the monarchy and the communists. I hope there is peace in that place because I wanted to visit Nepal and feel the chilling effect of the shangrilla magic.

Nepal is a beautiful country with Mt Everst as backdrop and very sweet people.
Nepalese religion, handycraft, food and people are by far one of friendier culture. It's worth going there many times.
The country adopted many Indian traditions both good ones and backward ones as well. The caste system is still very much there. One can identify other's caste thru the name. However, the so-called Nepalese people also include Tibetan refugees who settled there after exile and flourished. This makes Nepalese very hospitable country.
For more information check out Lonely Planet. It's not scholarstic reading, but it gives you nice description.
Hope this helps.
