Now, I am Canadian, but the majority of the news I watch is American (I live right across from Detroit). Now I could be wrong, but it seems to me that many many times, teachers (elementary) are being shafted.

I could be wrong though.

Teachers should be paid more...after all, they are paving the way for our youth!

I am a High School teacher in a crime-ridden area of California.
First - it is an honor to have the responsibility of teaching young people. But I also think very little of the general public knows how it is in the classroom of a public school in 2007.
There are many wonderful young people, but the level of respect and behavior has greatly disintegrated over the past 20 years.
We do have a great influence over the future, and I can tell you that my colleagues are very professional, trained and competent. I have a Master's Degree and am constantly training and updating information and improving my skills - it is my responsibility. But it is often done after a 10 - 12 hour day with 195 students in and out of the room.
Should we be paid more? Are we worth more? Definitely. Shouldn't we make half of what a Lawyer or Doctor makes? Open for discussion but the pay is not essentially commeasurate or fair.

I agree that teachers are not paid as well. I'm not saying that they should be paid like sports stars(which by the way I think them and Actors/actress get paid way to much) But I do believe that they should be paid very well, more then what they make now!

Depends on the school district. For instance the one that I went to the teachers starting out salary was 60,000 and it increased every year, plus they got to take paid days off to go learn how to teach better, and if they didn't use their vacation or sick days they would just accumulate. Every time their contract was up they would threaten or actually go on strike. My senior year the students had a walkout because the teachers were threatening to go on strike at the end of the year. I hated these teachers none of them actually cared or gave damn about their students or whether their students were learning. BTW I went to a public school.

I think they should be paid more. You can become an RN in 2 years of Jr. College and make good bucks. You go to college 4 yrs minimum to teach, and they usually get their Master's Degree on top of that to make more money, but still not as much as nurses and others.

No, I make almost $80 thousand a year. I teach with very little materials and supplies. I have to make do with what I have. It is a thankless job. The only rewards are the children learning something.
