No, tung oil should not be used on a cutting board. It is not safe for use around food. The best choice is mineral oil, which you can get at the drug store. This is the same stuff that is available in products sold as "cutting board oil", and it is a lot less expensive. If you use regular cooking oil (olive oil, canola oil, corn oil, etc), they will turn rancid in time. Mineral oil (NOT mineral spirits), is by far the best choice. Do not use tung oil!

Not that I would use tung oil for a chopping block table or breadboard, but it's the RAW oil that contains poisonous toxins. These are apparently destroyed by the drying process. The finish is FDA-rated food-safe. Pure tung oil--not the stuff that says "tung oil finish"--does provides a tough surface finish that is absolutely waterproof; impervious to dust, alcohol, acetone, fruit and vegetable acids; and it doesn’t darken with age like Linseed and other vegetable oils. All of these benefits come at a price. Pure tung oil takes forever to dry, it doesn’t penetrate the wood surface very well, and it is expensive when compared to other drying oils.

I don't believe that tung oil is a good choice for cutting boards. I use a oil specially made for cutting boards and guess what ? It is called cutting board oil and is available at most lumber yards and home improvement centers. By the way it is also excellant to use on wooden knife handles and protects them from the soap and water needed to safely clean the metal portion of the knive.

There is a product on the market that is made for wood kitchen products and is not harmfull. I bought some to keep the handles and butcher block knife storage unit from drying out.
I do not remember the name of the product but it can be purchased at kitchen/cutlery stores or perhaps department stores that sell cutlery.

NOOOOO! Go to your local hardware store to buy a mineral oil preservative for butcher blocks. Never use a cooking oil,as that will "sour" the wood.

Oil?? Let the natural oils in the wood come out. Don't add to them. They natural oil in the wood kills most bacteria.

Just keep it clean, and use it.
