I just killed a small brown snake in our backyard last week with a shovel. Make sure the shovel is somewhat sharp and chop the snake near its head. Good luck ~ be careful!

Where do you live approximately? In the U.S.most green snakes aren't venomous. Chances are you are killing a very beneficial and harmless snake.
If you are asking about how to kill a snake or anything for that matter, than you are in serious need of education about animals and their beneficial effects for humans.
Snakes eat mice, rats, and other vermin that would spread disease (most infamous being the bubonic plague). Also snakes are not very smart and would much rather slither away than provoke an attack from you...even the venomous kind. Like any other animal they will only attack if they feel they are cornered. The harmless variety may not even try to attack because they know they can't hurt you.
If I were you, I would just leave the snake alone or try to chase it away from where you don't want it to be. At 20 cm it's probably a juvenile--not even a year old yet. Not only would you be killing a harmless snake, but a baby to boot.
Please do the right thing and let it go.

Kill it? Why do you want vermin to live in your yard? If there is a snake in your yard he is there hunting prey, and most likely prey that is far more harmful than he is. I'd be glad that he's there. We have a resident black rat snake in our woodpile and we're very thankful for his free pest control services.

Why would you want to kill an animal that isn't harming you and is just going about its daily life? Just ignore it and leave it alone. Snakes are living things and it's no more acceptable to murder a snake than it is to murder a dog.

It would be much better if you could trap it and relocate it. Snakes are very beneficial to have around they are great rodent catchers. So don't kill it if you don't have to.

You don't kill it, you leave it alone. It isn't hurting you so don't you hurt it. Don't worry the snake is not planning on making your backyard a permanent home, just stopping by briefly.

You don't have to kill it. just call your local animal control in you area and they will take care of it for you. I've have had several instances with rattlesnakes, and all i had to do was call animal control and they caught it and relocated it w/o having to harm it. so don't kill it if you don't have to.
