I've signed up to audit two courses at a local college. Am I going to be required to turn in any work? I figured that since I'm not getting credit, I wouldn't have to turn in work, but now I'm hearing otherwise from a few people. I haven't asked the professors yet, but one of them, when I asked him if I could audit his class, agreed yet said he was very unfamiliar with the auditing process. The other professor seemed to know a bit more about it. Neither, however, has mentioned the procedure. Can I not just sit in?

It depends. Standard procedure is that an auditor does not do work such as papers, but may be required to attend regularly or do the reading. I mean, there are no grades, so what is the point of doing papers? However, I have seen cases of teachers not knowing that, and insisting students do papers, etc. However, that is counter to what auditing is about. Is does make sense, though, that a professor require the auditing student to read, so they may participate in the class conversation. And if they can't follow the class discussions, why would one go? Of course, it would be different for a large lecture.

I believe Auditing only means that you will not receive grading for the course. Even if the instructor asks that you turn in papers, it's up to you to decide if you want to. You may get more out of the course by writing a paper or two. If you Audit, then you usually do not write the exams.

When I checked on auditing this what I was told: I had to attend all classes and do the homework but I didn't have to test... However it costs money for u to audit.. If u are going to have to do all the work, and pay for it..get credit for it.. If u find out u are going to fail it , drop it but at least try it.. I would have had to do all the research papers, etc.. If u are going to spend that time in class, get credit.
