Reload the sound driver. You may also need to go to dell.com and pull updates that they have for your model computer and cpu. Mother board updates too.
And go to your sound card manufacturer site and pull an updated driver from them as well

Sometimes it plays and sometimes its just cuts off?
well it happened to me alot before i changed my sound card.
I've heard all the advices to update driver, install old version, change sound set-up, none of it works.
So i think you might have to get it changed unfortunately.

best fix i can think of is scrap the whole thing and get a mac.
