An explosion has been heard in the US embassy compound in the Greek capital, Athens, reports say.
Police have surrounded the building and cordoned off the nearby area as they begin to investigate the disturbance.

There was no immediate information about what caused the suspected blast, and no word on any damage or possible injuries.

Fire engines rushed to the scene, amid reports of a third floor blast shortly before dawn, AFP news agency said.

Shameful act and cowardly. I am American, live here in Athens and have been to the embassy on several occassions. While I think it was digusting, I do not think by any means the embassy was "attacked". It was moreover, a stupid act by an amatuer or amatuers to seek attention. Why else would they have done this at 5 in the morning when virtually no one was in the entire compound? The Greek news here was all over the story of course, but seem to be a little more focused and less sensational with their headlines like FOX, CNN and BBC have been. Athens is one of the safest European cities and in my 3 years here, I have never sensed any anti-american feelings toward me as an ex-patriat, although have heard the occassional rumblings regading the US policies regading Iraq, Turkey and several minor other issues. On the whole, the Greeks like Americans for many reason, mostly because so many Greeks have relatives in the USA or maybe onced lived there themselves as well as appreciate immeasurably the contribution the tourism brings into the economy, mostly from North Americans and other more western countries. I hope this incident and headlines do not reflect poorly the Greek people and Athens in general as they are a sincere, loving people and in one of the most fantastic cities and countries you'll ever vsiit.

yes, once again, life in these United States has forever been violated.
I wonder how soon those involved in the explosion will admit to this travesty, which affects not just Americans.
Keep praying for peace, for the sakes of our children, grandchildren, and future generations.
