I am guessing forcing her to be politically correct, when she was a free spirit and didn't want to make excuses for everybody to do whatever they wanted at the expense of others.

well, the way I see it, they obviously used a Room 101 fear tactic. The book of course never actually tells you what they did, nor hints at what she has a phobia of.
