a good example is to just surf through yahoo's questions & answers site to see the vast differences of people's behavior.

very positive feedback from most of you!
- I just wanted to experiment to see how this question would be answered as serious or cruel.
of course we had a couple bitter answers (expected), but it does make sense ...the majority of you agreed that a person's pain will make them become bitter and take it out on others.
for example: john decided to tear into me for posing this question. using big words that he obviously doesn't understand, he attacked not only me but all of you by giving out "thumbs down" to everyone (I gave you all "thumbs up" to make up for it).
at first I was offended but decided to figure out WHY he was so bitter. after going to his homepage and reading some of the cruel answers he spews out towards all yahoo members, I realized that john is the exact reason this question has been posted!

...interesting.

yes, can't stand these people with low self esteem that come on here ruining it for everyone!
"if ya ain't got nuthin' nice to say....then shut that pie hole and get a life!"
note: for all of you that are tired of these morons who try to sound smart and condescending....just ignore them and revel in the fact that the reason they are taunting you is just out of jealousy because God made them ugly.

Well, I always become mean and bitter in the social science section. If I hear one more social science ideologically driven, politically correct answer, that totally ignores scientific findings, I do not know what I will do. Take this question. A perfect example of discontinuous thinking. Why the dichotomy? Humans are variants and you get a wide distribution of behavior under the normal curve of that behavior. So, your question, though not the most, is still mostly ill posed. You have obviously " cherry picked " the data. I see lots of questions and answers on YA that do not come even close to the prediction we must make from your hypothesis. Of course, you see vast differences in peoples behavior. So why the glaring contradiction made by the in bold question?

Life isn't simple or black and white some people who have everything can be evil bitter and twisted, as can people who are born with nothing. Some people think that if they are thinner, taller, fatter, smaller, different features etc it will make them happier. I think that although most people would like to change something about themselves they realize that no-one is perfect (apart from God should you be religious) and whereas some people thrive on jealousy and hate, others will go the extra mile to help. Most people get a kick out of a smile or a thank you from a person that you have helped, some just like to feed the green eyed monster.

All depends upon where you want to focus your mind and abilities.

Perverse people can just waste their time posting meaningless spam or posting insults at one another (as in Politics or Religion), or you can focus on the good in the world and try to find a few questions that seem genuine and sincere.

There's enough real pain and despair in the world without intentionally looking for or creating MORE.

I think it has to do with individual's expectations. If you expect mr or miss perfect when you get married and you don't get them, then you start to become negative. If you expect great wealth or a wonderful career and these things don't measure up, then this will cause disappointment. If one's expectations are being continuously disappointed throughout life then one will end up very bitter, mean and angry. Unfortunately we are who we are.

In general, people who are mean and bitter are the ones who have been hurt many times in their lifetime, haven't really dealt with the issues, and continue to carry them around. People who remain positive are the ones who have made a choice to be happy and good-spirited and, ultimately, forgive.

Lack of self control, lack of maturity and experience, for bitterness.

I feel positive is telling it like you see it. Responding as you normally would. Seeing and understanding the whole panoramic view.

Some haven't found the true beauty of life yet. And those who have are the ones who remain positive.
