I went to school in Puerto Rico this past fall and now found out I will not be able to stay in the program. I will move back to the states but I still have 6 months on my lease. What do I do now?

You have several choices:
Negotiate a 'breach of lease' fee with your landlord.
Pay for the last 6 months, even if you're not residing there.
Move and ignore them. This one is tricky. If they're not very sophisticated you'll probably get away. If they are sophisticated, they can file a suit for the remainder of the lease (they'll probably get some portion of the six months), get a judgement, and mess up your credit.
Your best bet is to talk to them, explain your situation, maybe offer them a couple months rent to release you from the lease. They can't make you stay there, and they know that chasing you to collect the money isn't worth the time and effort.
If you did walk away, the landlord has an obligation to mitigate the damages. They can't let the property sit vacant without trying to re-rent it, advertise it, etc.
