All of John Irving's books are GOLD, if you like character development and strange plots.
Fourth Hand is good, but not in comparison to The World According to Garp, The Hotel New Hampshire, The Cider House Rules, or Water Method Man. Now that you've read one, I would suggest reading as much of him as you can.
Quite possibly the best author of our time.

I liked it. In typical John Irving fashion, he finds a way to evoke the most wonderful human emotions from the most unusual characters and situations.

I liked it (althogh I liked some other by Irving even better). I doubt any other novelist could have made such a brilliant novel out of such a weird plot.
