My friend has been a permanent resident in this country for the last 10 years but has recently gotten himself into some trouble. He is being charged with two misdemeanors(assult iv and menacing)in oregon. I told him he shouldn't worry just to expect some anger management classes and to get a public defender not a lawyer. Is there a possibility that he can get deported?

FYI, a public defender is a LAWYER. I guess you are advising him to not hire an attorney but rather let the court appoint him a public defender. If a person is not a citizen, at least in my state, the authorities can deport you if they want to because you committed a CRIME in our state, even if it is only a misdemeanor.

Good day, The Judge has the authority to punish an individual as harsh as the law allows or as light as he likes so tell the friend to pucker up and be ready. Usually for non violent and non drug cases The Honor is a little light sometimes. Everybody makes one or two boo boo's in their life I hope he fares ok.

possibility - of course - you are guest in a foreign country and should behave as one - illegals are another story - not for this space - but why should we allow people who committ crimes stay here - they can go home and do the same - we have enough problems of our own..no malice here - maybe jail time would help to wake your friend up to where he is - in someone else's home. I hope that he would have to do community service before he got deported - then he would be paying back the people he hurt here.

They should be deported or "any" violation of the law, they want to be here, then follow the rules or go back, plain and simple.
