I have to work as a guard, and I am dreading this. There is alot of standing around doing nothing. Any advice as to how I can keep my mind occupied?

I know, I know that I have to make sure that I do my job (mainly keep the peace, provide a presence, act as a deterrent, look for suspicious activity or individuals etc...) But there are long and tedious periods of just standing around while you glance at your clock every 5 minutes (in your mind you think it's 5 when actually only 1 minute has passe, after awhile you think 5 hours have passed when only 1 has...lol)

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Leo - tell me about it - been there - the only thing is to keep in mind that you can do better - put your mind to it and youi can make it happen . Being a security guard to my experience and
opinion is basically being a scape-goat - basically a reason for everyone else to dump their s*** on you . I felt so degraded at times , esp when people cannot get to "break " rules and if you are posted at a condo , its even worse , those 12 hour shifts and endless reports . . . oh no , i hate to even think about it - the hell i went through - just to pay my bills . Most security jobs involve
duties that do NOT even in the least way relate to a security position - or concierge desk officer , things like boiler room
patrols , placing elevators on service , issuing of parking passes and parking tickets , distributing of meomos from mngt office door to door - name it >>>>
All i can suggest is >>>>>> i never thought that i could get out of it >>>>>> kept going from check to check - never having enough to make that move . I have found a good job as a Hotel night auditor - and i find it so interseting , meet new faces / people
At least I know what I am expected to do - I come in do my part and go . No Superintendent "power trips " to deal with
no ignorant people to deal with , >>>>> its what i found and guess what ? the pay is even more than a security position
So put your mind to it - You can make it .
I could gladly help you if you wish , e-mail me

good luck -

Security can be a good gig depending on where your at? For example, i workee security at a hospital and hated it. Just got a new security job at a hotel working nights and loving it. I went from making $11/hr at the hospital to over $14/hr at the hotel. So it depends where your working security.

I've never done a security job... but to be honest with you I'd silently search for another job and run when that opportunity does come!!

But on another note... perhaps you should bring a laptop or a small TV to watch.... that's all I can think of since talking on the phone would be against code.

Good luck.
