Hughes is 21 and had a great year at AA and Bailey is 21 and did great at AA last season.

Baseball America and www.minorleaguebaseball.com both rank Bailey 3rd and Hughes 4th among prospects.

Both throw mid 90's and have other pitches although Bailey has a well developed breaking ball and an improving change up where Hughes relies more on blowing the opposition away with his fastball.

In my mind Hughes had a slightly better year in 2006 and dominated at 2 levels in 2005. Bailey did not have a dominant year in 2005 but blossomed at AA in 2006.

Both would probably have to take a back seat to Alex Gordon and Delmon Young as the top overall prospects though.

All I know is from scouting reports I have read, I haven't seen either in person, BUT, from all accounts Homer Bailey is really something special. I have heard a lot about both, but Bailey gets more universal praise (not that that necessarily means anything) Bailey may also get a chance this year already, where as Hughes is a litlle log-jammed in the Yankees system.

I'd say Homer Bailey has the slightly better pure stuff but Hughes has more control over all of his pitches. Also Hughes' best pitch (his 12-6 curve) has not been in use since high school as the Yankees already deemed in ML ready and a 'plus plus' pitch so they didn't want him throwing it until this up and coming year to save wear on his elbow.

Definitely Philip Hughes. Although he is young, he is progressing through the famr system and has been highly touted by many scouts. I have heard that Homer Bailey is a good prospect but I don't think he is at the same level as Hughes.

Philip Hughes - 10-3 2.25 138 k's
Homer Bailey - 7-1 1.59 77 k's

Both look great. But Bailey has dominated since high school and is still pitching great. Bailey is better at this time.

i'm a huge proponent of the "There's no such thing as a pitching prospect" theory, but if I had to pick, I'd say Bailey by a whisker (or lack thereof).
