Based on the numbers you gave, you should get back all of any federal withholding or state withholding they took out of your paychecks.

That doesn't not include the FICA or medicare taxes.

If anything was withheld for federal income tax, then you should file, to get it all refunded to you. This does not include social security and medicare, or it might say FICA on your check stub - those you don't get back.

If nothing was withheld for federal income taxes, then you don't have to file a federal return.

Depending on where you live, you might have to file a state return, and maybe something for your town. Your parents might be able to let you know about those. Most states, and some cities, have them - others don't.

It's worth a lot more to them to claim you, and if you are still living with them, they are entitled to claim you. $2,000 is nothing really, you won't get a lot back at all.

you only get back taxes if taxes were withheld from you salary. Look at your last paystub and see how much total was withheld. Since you didn't make the personal exemption amount you probably get it all back.

Legally, you are not entitled to a refund if your parents claim you.
