If you define java in simple words, you can say java is a Object Oriented Programming Language. According to Sun Java "Java is an Object Oriented Programming Language, which has some properties like Robestness, Multithreading, Secure, Smart & Dynamic, Compiled & Interpreted Language

Previously JAVA Language was named as "OAK", where OAK was also the different language, so the founder of the java named it as "JAVA" which actually a tree planted in his house yard, where he an see that tree from his room's window. So the name Java took over the name OAK.
