a convention is just the standard way of doing things, think of the word conventional. Rhyming poetry is a convention. Standard Grannar and Spelling is a convention. Sentence and Paragraph structure is a convention.

A literary convention is a device used by most writers. For example, when writing murder mysteries, the least likely suspect is the guilty person. In romance stories, the hero and heroine have to dislike each other when they first meet. Is that helpful?
