You can be an author(note spelling,it helps to be able to spell),i.e. a writer at any age.If you mean published writer, well that's any age too but if you're young you are not likely to write anything worthwhile.

If you mean author, then any child with a pencil and paper qualifies. If you mean published, well, I don't know the age of the youngest published novelist, but I can definitely overthrow Paolini. I never made it mainstream, but I had a novel published when I was 14. =)

Writing is great fun, and if you enjoy it you should definitely pursue it. I have some resources if you ever need/want them. Just send me an email at knitwit@journalist.com. I'd be more than happy to help you out!!!

The preteen author Gordon Korman published his first book around the age of 13 I believe.
If you haven't read his books, I recommend you start with I Want to Go Home! or else Beware the Fish!
He is hilarious. I loved his books at age 11 and still find them funny as an adult.
I believe Louisa May Alcott wrote her book The Inheritance at age 17, but it wasn't published until after her death. It's a wonderful novel and was made into a great made for tv movie. You can purchase them all on amazon.com
