I had my first one at 12 weeks--early on the check to make sure you are carrying one baby & not multiples.
your next one should be at 20+ weeks--that will be the 'big' one to determine sex.
I've only had 3 so far & Im going to pop anyday now, lol
I had 'regular' ones at 12 & 19 weeks & at 16 weeks I had to go to the er so they did one there.

by week 12 your baby is fully developed all it needs from that time on is to gain waight and get bigger. By week 11 the gender is already choosen so if you are getting an ultrasound done to found out gender no it is not to early. Any other information your doctor needs can also be done at that time no problem. I just went in for my first ultrasound because I have a history of plusenta being to close to my cervix so they watch it closely. I am only 12 weeks and I could see my baby today perfectly if it would have just turned the right way I may have been able to see what gender it is already. So no I do not belive it is to early to have an ultrasound done at that time.

17 weeks altogether? Here (ontario, canada) they do a routine one between 18 and 20 weeks. Reading some other posts, people say that you can tell the baby's gender as early as 15, so some are done routinely then i guess. They can do an ultrasound anytime, u/s have not been shown to cause any problems for the baby. Sometimes they do them right away, to date the pregnancy, ( i think i had one done around 8 weeks) and they do some early in pregnancy to test for spinal cord (diseases?) problems in any case. If you are talking about an u/s that is not medically necessary and is just being done for your own personal records of the pregnancy, then you might want to wait longer, but if it's a medical u/s the doctor likes to send people around this time to make sure everything is developing properly

I was 13 weeks when I had my ultrasound with this pregnancy. What would it be too early for? They could tell that the baby was developing properly and even that I was having a boy.

It's not too early at all. Most women have their first ultrasound at 20 weeks, but about 17 weeks should be fine.

4 months is the "normal" first ultrasound. Its to measure size to give a better guess as to your due date. With my first pregnancy they were unable to tell a sex. I didn't find out until she was born. With my second pregnancy at my 4 month ultrasound they told me it appears to be a boy and he was. Finally with my 3rd pregnancy at 4 months they said yup, he's a boy! If you are looking only to get a sex, there are new 3D ultrasounds that can give you a 100% answer. Hope this helps... and.... CONGRATS!!!

definitely not too early. i'm surprised you haven't had one before now. typically they have one around 12 wks and then again around 20 wks to check the baby's development. from 20 wks on they are pretty much fully formed and just gaining fat and muscle, so it's not necessary to give another ultrasound unless they're worried. you'll be able to see quite a lot at your ultrasound. enjoy it. i'd love another opportunity to see my baby, but i'll have to wait 3 months until he/she is born!

I had my first one at 11 weeks and you would be amazed at how much you could actually see. head, body outline, a foot, nose, everything was so clear. But I guess that is just depends on the sono machine, because i had another at 17 weeks and you couldnt see anything!

never too early, if very early you won't see much. I have just seen one done at 7 weeks and again at 11 weeks and there is a definite head, spine, heart, hands and feet. It's awesome!!
