My laptop got stolen from my car, that was broken into, today. For various reasons it looks like auto-insurance wont cover it but rental insurance would (i dont own a home).

If i take renters insurance today, any chance that it would cover the laptop that i lost today?

No, you would not be covered as the insurance would kick in AFTER the theft occured.
You should also specify the value of items in your possessions etc, this at th time you are asking for a quote so if you said you owned a laptop when in fact you did not own one it would be a lie and a farly serious one, too.
Renters insurance is cheap anyway and worth getting, about $17 a month

You poor thing, not everyone knows about renters insurance. Like the first person said, if you are a good liar, but if you already filed a police report there is nothing you can do. Plus a brand new insurance company would prob. investigate if something was reported so quickly. That means they could possibly talk to the landlord, and you told him already too right?
I do not think where you are there is anything you can do other than go get renters insurance for any future mishaps. It is only like $12 bucks a month. I answered one of your questions b4.
I hope you are OK, a person can feel very violated and vulnerable when they are robbed!

You won't get covered if buy renters insurance today. Like any other insurance coverage you need to purchase an insurance first in order for them to cover you or your personal possessions. When you file a claim, insurance company investigate on your file, so there isn't anything you can do than for your future disasters.

No insurance in the world is retroactive, unless you lie about the claim. And claims filed within a couple months of the start of the policy will be vigorously investigated. Don't think nobody's ever thought of it before. Fraudulent claims cost the insurance industry plenty, and are a big part of why insurance is so expensive for the rest of us. Insurance investigators have so many tricks to find the frauds, even if you'd take out a policy today and file a legitimate claim a year from now, They'll probably discover that you'd asked about it on Yahoo Answers, and use that as evidence in their denial of your claim.

One of the cardinal rules of getting away with a crime: keep your mouth shut!

No. They are smarter than that. You were suppose to have the insurance first and be paying into it. It is unusual that car insurance won't cover it(but I guess that is because it is not part of the car)

Boy your persistant arn't you. Yea have a car wreck and go get insurance to have it fixed. Just as I said about your landlord. Watch your insurance man laugh till he wets his pants. If you fail to tell him until days later, that is insurance fraud. If you get caught, he will nail you to the wall.

No, it will only cover something stolen from you after the exact hour and minute the insurance takes effect. They will check the police report and it will have a time on the report.

Did you already report the theft (get a police report)? Your going to need to show that you reported the theft when you make a claim. BTW, don't advertise if your not ready to sell.
