Typically a region is given it's name because of a major physical feature of the world that it borders or is identified by. As to how the Pacific Ocean received it's name, that's a different question.

You have got to be kidding! Look at any U.S. map and it is clear that the first for stated are on the Pacific Coast, and Hawaii is totally surrounded by water. It's the PACIFIC.
By the way, it's "Why are...." not "Why is..."
