I don't know if it's the same thing, but what you're describing sounds like Norplant. With the Norplant system, there are six tubes that are stuck into your arm between the skin and the fat layers. Once implanted, it works on a slow release system to maintain a continuous stream of progesterone into your system, which fools your body into thinking it's pregnant (just like all the other forms of BC, just the other forms do it for a much shorter period of time. It starts working immediately and is good for five years. Should you want to have it removed and attempt to get pregnant, you should allow 3-6 months to allow the last of the hormones to leave your system before expecting to conceive.
Its side effects can include weight gain, nausea, and extended periods of time without menstruation/irregular periods (I went nearly a year without a period...so lovely).
It was taken off the market about five years ago due to a class action lawsuit (not entirely certain what that was all about..didn't look into it).
I had two doses for a total of ten years of Norplant. I loved it. It was remarkably economical, 99.9% effective, and free of the oops issues that pills, patches and rings come with if you forget to take your dose. I really missed it while I was still taking birth control. Now, however, I'm pregnant (so no, it doesn't hurt your chances for conception later on). I really wish it would come back, as I don't plan to be pregnant forever.

* Norplant and Norplant 2 - This product was taken off the market in July 2002. If you are using the Norplant system, you should contact your health care provider about what your contraceptive options will be after the five year expiration date of your Norplant system. Norplant consists of small stick-like devices, or "rods," that are placed under the skin. The rods release a very low, steady level of a steroid that prevents pregnancy for up to five years. However, the rods can be taken out at any time and you then can become pregnant. This method is 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy. It does not protect against STDs or HIV. Requires visits with your health care provider to make sure you are not having any problems.

That's Implanon:
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control/the-implant.htm
There was an older similar product called Norplant, but that was six rods instead of one. It's no longer available in the US. Norplant lasted five years. Implanon is good for three.

Its called Norplant, but last I knew it was taken off the market. You may want to check into the depo provera shot. Its a shot you get every three months from the doctor.

It's not a stick it's a tube and they usually implant 5 at a time.
Norplant. it's 95% effective, but you can see and feel them under your skin (they put them in your upper arm. ) not as effective as the pill.

Good Luck! hope these websites fill you in. And you can ask your doctor about birth control. most likely that is going to be your best source.
