What is the MySpace etiquette (particularly among professionals, such as the musicians) for posting "Thanks for the add" graphics - custom graphics, mind you, that don't sparkle or flash, but denote that I am a musician as well? Are these appropriate only when someone else requests to add me? Or also when I request and they approve? Or is this just not done on non-personal MySpaces?

I believe its done on anyones myspace. The thanks for the add could be for either reason. Maybe you requested to be added, so you thank them, or they requested you, so you thank them. Its not necessary, but it is usually appreciated when you show a response. Welcome to the addictive world of myspace, its my favorite place to be.

There is no "myspace etiquette." Even if there was, you do not have to follow it because it would probably be completely ridiculous anyway.
Listen, it doesn't matter what anyone is goign to say for an answer to this, the only thing that matter it what you think. If you want to say thank you to someone you added or someone who added you as a new friend on myspace, then just do it! Its really nice though that you are thinking this much about being polite. However do not go by someone else's opinion about what is "proper" or not. Decide for youself, either a friend or a band it doesn't matter, they shoudl be happy to get a thanks from you. I know i always like it when someone responds after i accept their request or i add them. Plus you don't want to go adding friends without talking to them, and saying "hey thanks for the add" is a fine way to get a communication going.

Those flashing graphics are obnoxious! And they seriously make me think about un-friending a person. A simple message is much better.

in proper use, the term 'thanks for the add' is defined as somebody saying thankyou for requesting them, in other words, if you visit your home page, and it says 'new friend requests', you may go to that persons account and leave a comment saying 'thanks for the add!' or something along the lines of.

Thanks for the add is when someone add you. You are essentially thanking them for adding you. It doesn't really make sense the other way around. Why would you thank someone because you added them?? They should be thanking YOU for adding THEM.

If they ask you, they should say 'Thanks For The Add'
The whole Big picture thing saying THANKS FOR THE ADD!!1!!1 Is really annoying.. Its what bands do, people don't like there profiles messed up and stretched.
