Depo Provera made my periods go away for 3 years. It also made me bitchy and I had no sex drive at all. I stopped getting the shot while in college, after reading that its a carcinogenic. It was on the list of carcinogenic synthetic hormones right next to DDT (nasty now illegal cancer causing pesticide).

I used it for 3 years and I will never use it again. Oh, it was great when I needed it, but after I got married and was trying to conceive, the effects took over a year to wear off. Also, while you are on it the vaginal dryness is unreal. From all that progesterone. Yes, my period did stop the entire time I was on the shot, which was nice. No pain.

The only way I would consider using it again is if I was absolutely certain I was done having children. If you are young, I would go with something else like the pill because once you stop it, it is out of your system.

EDIT: Reading the answer above me about the bone loss: this is very true. I broke my foot a year or so ago, doing basically nothing. docs think being on depo may have made my bones weak. Not sure about that, but an interesting theory.

I used it for 3 years and i will underneath no circumstances use it once more. Oh, it used to be as soon as high-first-class after I wanted it, however after I obtained married and was once once looking to conceive, the outcome took over a yr to put on off. Additionally, while you possibly on it the vaginal dryness is unreal. From all that progesterone. Sure, my interval did discontinue the whole time i was on the shot, which was once quality. No ache. The a method i might consider utilising it once more is if I used to be as soon as without doubt individual I used to be done having youngsters. In case you are younger, i would go along with some thing else similar to the capsule on the grounds that while you discontinue it, it's out of your process. EDIT: finding out the reply above me concerning the bone loss: that could be very exact. I broke my foot a 12 months or so prior to now, doing truly nothing. Doctors think being on depo could have made my bones vulnerable. Now not definite about that, nevertheless an fascinating idea.

I was getting the shot for a year and a half after my son was born. It was definately good because I didn't have to worry about remembering birth control every day, only to make an appointment 4 times a year. Also, I stopped getting my period with it, which was great. After the year and a half, I switched to the Mirena IUD because I gained a lot of weight with the Depo shot. I don't remember how long it took me to get my period back; I think it was a few months. My doctor did say that fertility decreases with it though; I remember him saying something like 50%, but I was able to get pregnant afterwards, so I don't think there's that much of a problem with it. I wouldn't use it again though.

I had that after I had my first son. It was nice to not think about birth control for three months and it was also nice because I was too thin and it gave me curves in all the right places....but I had problems with it because I would not stop bleeding. I had to get off of it because I had a period almost constantly for 7 months...at least it seemed constantly. It wasn't worth it to me. Everyone reacts differently though. I most likely would have stayed on it if it weren't for the bleeding but I have been hearing that you really shouldn't be on Depo for more than 2 yrs. I'm not sure of the exact reason but I'm not sure it's so good for you. Of course most birth control has it's side effects but I think this one may be one of the most unsafe. Good luck!

I was on the depo shot for three years and in that three years i never did once have a period which was a plus for me. I did not gain weight or have any kind of problems with it. I think it is the best form of birth control out there. I did not get pregnant on it and my husband and i never did use condoms.
After stopping the shot i became pregnant 11 months later -that is why i stopped the shot-

It is the worse choice I ever made in my life. I was on it for a year and I gained a ton of weight, was moody, and depressed, and just felt like crap all the time. I also found out it can cause bone density loss. when I stopped getting the shots it took me a year to get my period back and 2 months to get pregnant after that. we had been wanting a baby the whole time and that year was awful. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone.

Well in the beginning I bled, bled, bled. Especially during intercourse. Then there was irregular bleeding which never completely goes away-but most of the time it is just spotting. But after a few months, I stopped having periods. Sometimes I still bleed, if my partner-goes too deep but not having a period most of the time is GREAT. 70% GAIN weight.
