You should go to open mic nights at different live music venues and get together with other aspiring musicans in order to improve on your networking. Who knows you might meet your next band or perhaps some musician who could introduce you t a music industry powerhouse.

Also, you could look at music magazines, live entertainment magazines where a lot of artists advertise for stuff like bands.

You could showcase some of your work on the internet, although get them protected by an Intellectual Property Lawyer or Copyright lawyer before you do.

There is a musician by the name of Sandi Thom who broke into the industry and became popular on the internet before even the mainstream music industry noticed her. In fact, she did a world wide concert that fans paid to watch with their internet connections. She performed the concert, worldwide, from her home. Lately, her music albums selling like hot cakes after being signed to a record label.

Since, you are already creative, try and market plus sell yourself--(in the musical sense) creatively like that young lady did.

Continue to play covers, as others will inspire your writing and improve your skill. Be very honest about what you listen to, what songs from other artists you play to stay sharp, and your own writing. Know your goals as a writer.
If you hope to sell or perform your songs, you must be very objective. Do not get overly attached to your music. Try to write songs every week and retain your very best. Never throw out lyrics or music you've written as it can be readded to a future song. Grow a thick skin for criticism, it's part of the business. Don't force it either. Work when you are on a roll or take a break.
Good luck.
