There is no exact answer. It depends on your preferred format, the bitrate, the length of the songs, and whether you have it include the album artwork for display on your Nano during playback (yes, they can do that). The short answer is that I've got about 1200 songs using AAC at 128kbps that clock in at about 4GB. Figure a bit less than half of that (500-550?) because part of your capacity will be used up by the firmware that runs it. Lower your bitrate and you'll be able to squeeze it down considerably, but I doubt you'll want to take it down as far as it'll go (a measly 16kbps that'll probably sound like a low-power radio station on a Walkman).

about 500 depending on how long the songs are..average song around 3 minutes long
