I used to wonder this myself, until I had an interesting conversation with a woman that had adopted a Chinese baby girl. The reasoning behind the adoption of foreign babies is many adoptees feel that the U.S. childcare system is one of the best in the world, and that children to be adopted are treated more humanely here. By adopting from other, more impoverished or overpopulated nations, they feel that they are saving a life. In the case of this Chinese girl, the Chinese limit the number of children a family can have, and by tradition the chinese typically prefer to have boys. There are numerous stories over there of baby girls being left places for dead or sometimes even killed because of this. Not only that, but there are more children to be adopted over there, and the childcare system isn't nearly as humane to them all. Her story gave me interesting insight into why this type of adoption is done. I'd never thought of it from that angle before.

I have the impression (most likely an incorrect impression) that the majority of American born babies that are up for adoption come from mothers who used drugs during pregnancy resulting in problem babies and children later on; and that unwanted babies from foreign countries are not likely not to have these same problems. But it is a fact that adopted babies and children from foreign countries also have problems.

We must give credit to a family willing to adopt babies and children regardless of where they come from.

I have been wondering that too! If I ever adopt it will be an American child. Why would anyone want to travel to another country, try to find a child, go through that country's red tape and then adopt. I don't know what celbs are thinking! I can understand if you are working in that country and you happen across a child and a bond is formed but to just go to a country out of the blue is beyond me.

I don't quite understand that myself. When I'm older, and married, I plan to adopt at least two kids (over the age of 3 but under 15).

I wouldn't say ALWAYS there are thousands maybe millions of children adopted in US and Canada every year, we just do not hear about those ones.
