They don't share a placenta, and one remains attached and safe in their own gestational sack. My mom miss carried my twin brother.

Identical twins are conceived of one egg but normally develop in their own gestational sacs. Sometimes one can die, and there are alot of different reasons, it puts the other baby at risk but it can be just fine because it has its own little protected sac to live in.. as long as the blood supply hasn't been interrupted and the baby maintains fluid in the sac. Mom will have to be on bedrest for the duration of the pregnancy and they will monitor the baby closely, and as long as she doesn't continue to dilate, things can progress to term.

I don't really know how it works, but I lost a twin at about 9 weeks. The other - my son - turned out perfectly!

I'm not sure this question can be answered. Sometimes things just happen including the one twins survival.

I hope this is just a rhetorical question but, if it isn't, I'm so sorry for your loss.

The sac is a different one if they are fraternal twins. Identical twins are in the same one together, so if you lose one, then the other will die too.
