It really depends on the type of disc damage. If the disc is torn or otherwise degenerated, it may be beyond it's capacity to repair itself. But most disc compression issues can be relieved with adjustments, and encouraging the disc to "rehydrate". Medical doctors will not often tell you this, because a) it requires excercises and therapies they can neither provide nor monitor and b) many people won't do the work. I have known several who opted not to have surgery, saw a chiropractor periodically and were amazed at the results.

you are in desperate need of a good chiropractor, i had a pinched nerve and it was corrected by mine. make sure it is one who will do xrays and electro testing of each vertebrae
a nerve becomes pinched when your vertebrae are misaligned. waiting will just make it worse, as it will put stress on other parts of your body by trying to compensate.
massage might help temporarily, but you need to get your spine back where is should be.

you should go to a chiropractor that does active release technique.. it has helped my friend that has two herniated discs and she can walk normally and play sports again... it helps soooo much!! you should really try it!
