The tribes in the Middle East correspond to clans in Scotland. They are extended families. There are over 100 of them in Iraq.

The Iraqis have five names, where as we usually have two or three. The first is the given name, the second is the father. The third is the grandfather on the father's side. The fourth is the great grandfather on the father's side. The fifth is the tribal name.

So an Iraqi named Ali Mohamed Saad Yusef Al Mansour translates: Ali, son of Mohamed, son of Saad, son of Yusef of the tribe of Al Mansour. Many times Arabs use nicknames. In the above example, Ali's father could be called Abu Ali, which means father of Ali. This is used when there are a lot of guys with the same name. If there were several Mohamed's in a group, one of them would be called Abu Ali, like we would say "Ali's father".

Women do not take their husband's name when they marry. They retain their own tribal name.

Bedouins are one of the many tribes in the Mid East. 'Bedu' means "inhabitant of the desert," and refers generally to the desert-dwelling nomads of Arabia, the Negev, and the Sinai.
