"Mere" in this statement means "almost". It's not a statement of "looking down" at the salary but a statement of "mind-bogglingness" of the amount. Especially of his age and the dawn of the deterioration of his talents.

Beckham is a good buy from a football point of view but a GREAT buy from a business point of view. They may pay him £128m over 5 years, but he will make them more than that in the same period.

He hasnt even signed yet and already there's a bunch of people in the UK who would have otherwise never heard of LA Galaxy beginning to take an interest. It's already paying off!

Not to mention his legions of fans in Asia, when he signed for Real in a £25m+ deal the club made that back overnight with shirt sales over there.

A lot of money, but shrewd business.

It's sad but true. This washed up English fool is getting £500,000 per week as his salary.
