I'm going to be visiting Boston for a week but the Hotel we're staying in is located in Burlington. Is renting a car a good option? (Taking in count I've never drove around Boston before) Are there public transportation options to be moving from one place to the other all week?
NOTE:Please if you give advice about bus or train options be as specific as you can, thanks.

From Burlington, you can travel by car to Boston. Public transportation is a good way to get around the city. Personally I like to park at the Boston Common Garage. It is underneath the Boston Common. It has access to many of the tourist spots, that you wish to see. You can walk across "The Common" to the State House, or to the Public Garden. In season you can ride the Swan Boats, in the Public Garden. You also have access to The Freedom Trail, from the Common. If you like to shop, The Boston Common is bounded on one side, by Tremount Street, and on an adjoining side by Boylston Street, which has shops, theaters, and restaurants.

If you rent a car, the commute is only 23 mins and just under 17 miles. But what do U do with your car once U get there, as parking is difficult? The average rate for parking a day there is $31.50.

I couldn't find any public trans from Burlington to Boston.

Maybe you need to look on craigslist.org to find a place in or closer to Boston. You will wind up paying a lot for the commute.
So maybe you should look into staying somewhere else.

There is a large train station, Anderson Park, just a few miles from Burlington (near Rtes 93 and 95 - go north on 93 1km from the junction to the Commerce Way/Anderson exit). Weekdays trains to North Station, Boston, run as often as every 15mins at rush hours, hourly at other times. Weekends every two hours.

I believe there is also bus service from Burlington but it is much slower and you have to make connections.

Check with your hotel on public transportation in Burlington that'll take your to and from Boston. My source indicated the nearest train station to Boston is located in the town of Woburn, MA about 5 miles away from Burlington and Cambridge, MA about 10 miles away.

Drving in Boston is a major pain (traffic is horrible!) so you might want to compromise and rent a car but drive it to Woburn and catch a train to go into Boston.
