Because they are in high demand!
And more importantly we grandparents (and a lot of parents) will pay any price to see that beautiful smile on our toddlers' face when we give them their beloved Thomas LOL!
One thing to think about-----Our youngest grandson just turned 7 and no longer plays with any of the Thomas stuff we bought him over the last few years.
I sold all of his Thomas toys for a little less than what I paid for it.
I even had a bidding war going on for the train and tracks on a local garage sale site--
I don't agree with the high prices of kid's toys, but again, most of us will pay it.

They just are - incredibly popular. My boyz love em too.....Keep looking around on line for them....there are dozens of websites that have em keep checking ebay. Brio makes a similar set like thomas too - you could always get some of the main engines then get the Brio track etc...they all fit together. Dont buy anything in stores....it's too much$

thomas the tank engine.....ahhhh i used too love that toy....i still watch the hows but to your question.... well thomas toys are getting pretty high tech no? and like ceetee said they are saling hot!!! plus thomas is famous ^-^
