Giant squid live very deep underwater and would have no reason to come up to the surface just to kidnap some humans off their lifeboats. People made up this story because they don't understand giant squid, and therefore fear them. Therefore they make stories about them to scare and impress people and this leads to the misunderstanding of giant squid among many other animals.

As for the size of giant squid, all species recovered from the ocean have been juveniles (and are also dead). Scientists estimate, using the juveniles as evidence, that an adult giant squid can be 10 meters (33 ft) for males and 13 meters (43 ft) for females from caudal fin to the tip of the two long tentacles (second only to the Colossal Squid at an estimated 14 meters (46 ft).

Footage and pictures of live giant squid have recently been documented. Scientists still know very little about these amazing animals.

okay first off. NO. secondly, where did you hear such a ridiculous tale?
i mean, giant squids have been sighted in the gulf of Mexico and the marianas trench. neitehr were the sites of any World war two battles, and i imagine that would be the reason for the life boats.

plus giant squids can't live that close to the surface, they need a high pressure environment so the whole thing is impossible.

No. The stories of the deep are generated by sailors when crossing the equator. Been there ... done that.
