If you want romance, try Chocolat.
And chocolate of course :)
The main character is a strong woman, she doesn't let anything stop her.

Kitchen Banana Yoshimoto

If I remember correctly it is actually two novellas, both of which are lovely and unique. She's a very good Japanese writer, and both the stories are very engaging. A little wistful perhaps, but totally worth the read. Won't take you very long either. If you finish it quickly I suggest you choose Like Water For Chocolate as a runner up!

A Year in Provence

I read A Dog's life by Peter Mayle and LOVED it. I have A Year in Provence on my reading list.

I can only recommend the ones I have read here, which are "Like Water for Chocolate", "Chocolat", "A Moveable Feast" and "The Jungle" (which is rather graphic but educational.
Just for fun you might try "Garlic and Sapphires" by Ruth Reichle

I'd choose all.

For you:

Chocolat Joanne Harris if you like novels.

A Year in Provence Peters Mayle If you like lite non fiction.

Fast Food Nation if you like current events and timely books.

Those are my choices I hope they help.
