How about a scratch and dent appliance shop. They have good appliances with minor dents or scratches.

Home Depot and Lowe's have really good deals sometimes. If you are not as concerned with looks, ask at Sears about their "scratch and dent" stores.
Also, try consumerreports.org. They don't offer a lot of tips on locations, but they have great rating systems on everything from home appliances to cars to baby gear. And, they give price ranges. (There is a membership fee though... I think its $25 for a year or $5 for a month. In my experience, well worth it!)

try craigslist, or there are locale stores that sell them with a dent in them they are new and warrented but almost half the price just check your yellow pages and reconditioned ones are great, that what I have and I got a washer and a dryer for $150 for both they are whirlpool and work great.

Most decent sized cities have appliance stores. Many home builders have references to find them if you call them or look in homes magazines for the ads.
