I work at a very busy gas station, and believe me, I get this all the time. The funny thing is, it isn't always just random people. Sometimes we get regulars that come in every single day that are ALWAYS mean, and no matter how hard I try, they act like they are above being nice to someone like me. Before I get too angry, I always tell myself that these people are like this because something is wrong in their lives, and that I shouldn't be upset or let it get to me, because I am the better person for putting up with it without taking my own frustrations out on other people. But you know what? Sometimes it DOES get to me, and if I wait on too many people that act this way, it makes me pissy for the rest of my shift.
But I look at it this way: I am 24 years old and I am already on a higher level than most of the general public that I wait on at my workplace (and believe me, I see hundreds of new faces every day). I swear I have a higher mentality now than many people that are 50+ years. And if I keep on at the rate that I am already going, and if I constantly learn throughout my entire lifetime, how much higher on the scale will I be, when I'M old?
My point is, if you're smart enough to accept people for who they are, and you don't understand why others cannot do the same (and believe me, I have a hard time understanding it too), then you are mentally on the right track. It's only human to feel hurt by ignorant people, but remember that only your own soul really matters. Screw them! Don't stoop to their level. They're just being pricks.

Is there really any other reason for someone to insult? Of course, I would be lying if I said it didn't bother me at all, but I get over it quickly. It makes me more sad to think that people just can't be nice, then sad for me personally. It's not that hard to be a decent person.

It always surprises me. Because it's so ludicrous. Only insults from the ones that know me make any difference to me.

It used to bother me when I was younger, but now at the tender age of 28, I've learned to move on and shrug off the negative vibes!

I don't care what others say. I insult myself and hate myself enough already.

If I don't really know them, it doesn't make much of a difference to me because they're ignorant about me.

it doesn't bother me any more, partially because it's become so common. people just seem to be more rude. if i don't know the person, i really couldn't care less, it makes them look like the idiot, not me.

people who shut other people down like that are very insecured
it hurts I know but you'll get over it soon. but those people are so unhappy with themselves they are their own worst enemy. don't let them bring you down to their level don't forget "actions speak louder than words"

Most of the time, matter than hell; but if it is something ridiculous that is being said, I consider the source and laugh.
