My sister and I are looking for an apartment in the Dallas area. I don't necessarily want to live downtown because of the crime problems. Anywhere in the vicinity-Irving, Arlington, Grand Prarie?
Which would you recommend? I have been searching online for over a year, and can't seem to find anyplace I would feel remotely comfortable. We are two twenty-something girls, (not into the party scene), just looking for someplace quiet.
I found this website ,Apartmentratings.com, and there's a lot of scary info on there, and i can't decifer what's real from what's a lie. Everyplace seems to have something wrong with it. Please help, I'm starting to get really overwhelmed, and would appreciate any advice that people could give. Best areas to live?
Any Apartment complexes come to mind? SAFETY is a higher priority than price. Please HELP!!!!
Thanks,
LT

Thanks for your feedback, so far. Just knowing what sections of cities are safest is a big help! I should have added where it is I will be traveling to each day. I'll be attending Dallas Baptist University. It's located on Mountain Creek Lake, just southwest of downtown Dallas. I would like to live no more than 10-20 miles away, because I've heard traffic is horrendous. Also, My sister will be looking for a full-time job in or around the area. So if anyone knows of any good employment opportunities or good companies, I would appreciate any info you could give about that.
Nothing Corporate, but something that pays around $10-$15 an hour. She has a bachelors degree if that helps. Again... any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Again,
LT

You're in luck. I am from Dallas and just recently moved to the 2nd safest city in the entire state of Texas. Plano, TX.
It is just north of Dallas. It is beautiful, affordable and has great shopping and crime free neighborhoods.
You would be safe ANYWHERE in Plano and not have to live in a dump.
The rent is really really cheap here.
Good Luck and if you move here,....well, WELCOME TO PLANO!
I think you would love it here.

Grapevine, Flower Mound, Far North Carrollton (and I mean far North). You didn't say where you will be working. That's significant, as traffic up there can be very overwhelming. Irving has some really bad areas; however; if you stay north like Las Colinas or Valley Ranch you still get the Irving area. Plano is great but there really is only one major way in and out and that is Hwy 75(Central Expwy). There are other roads, like the tollway, but still a major hassle to get anywhere south of Plano/Frisco.
All of the areas up there have bad sections accept for Flower Mound. But, they are an upscale community with very few apartment complexes.
My daughter has an apartment in Lewisville. She's poor, so it's a little run down but very very safe. We're lucky that a police officer lives right next door to her.
My suggestion. Use a locator service. I real service, not Apartment Guide etc. Try checking out u move free. They have a website or you can call the Lewisville location (inside Vista Ridge Mall) at 972-436-7368. Ask for Cari and tell her Lani (pronounced Lonnie)sent you. Good luck on your hunt. There are very nice and safe places.

Trust me, the best apartment complex to call home in the Dallas area is Addison Circle. It's like a downtown community located in the suburbs of North Dallas. They have:
4 swimming pools
Secured gate access requiring a keyless remote for every building
Restaurants and Bars
Shops
Easy access to the tollway
Lots of young people and activities to meet friends!
As far as safety goes, it's the safest you'll come across. You won't feel safer in any apartment complex anywhere in the DFW area.
For pictures and more info click on the link below and find Post Addison Circle.

I think the best place for you would probably be Irving and I suggest Apartment Finder.com or Craigslist.org the first is a apartment finder that is free and Craigslist has information posted directly by the dallas community and also lists great area apartments at really low prices. I saw an apartment for $305.00 in uptown Dallas. That is pretty good but I suggest you act fast as there are many people moving right now because of tax Season and the New Year.
GOOD LUCK!!!
P.S. Apartments are kind of dangerous because of all of the open dark parking lot areas. Try finding something with a neighborhood watch or asking someone who attends your school such as student union.

Arlington is a very good city to live in. Look for apartments in the Soutwest section of that city and stay clear of the Northeast or North Central sections. There's a park and ride complex in the SW section for commuters to Dallas.
I also agreed with the recommendation for Plano. It's a great community too and closer to Dallas than Arlington.
Check out the links below for apts in those two communities.

Dallas isn't nearly the dastardly place the media makes it out to be. You'll learn real quickly which areas of Dallas to avoid once you get here. There are plenty of safe areas to live, and just by being smart and aware, you can avoid the vast majority of danger.
Based on where your school is located, you will most likely want to look in Las Colinas/Irving, Grand Prairie, and Duncanville. All of those areas are safe overall, and I'm sure if you called the school, they could recommend good local complexes.
Look for complexes with gated entry and private security patrols. You might also want to look for a house to rent, instead of an apartment.

There are PLENTY of places to live in this town so hold out for what you want and keep searching.
Take care and best of luck!

There are some very nice areas around Cedar Hill, some good areas in Grand Prairie, and parts of Arlington. Arlington would give your sister lots of flexibility in finding a job.
Why don't you call DBU and housing and ask them where they recommend?

Hi! I work at Fairways of Bent Tree apartments in Dallas off Keller Springs and the Tollway. It's secluded, out of the way, enormous floorplans, gorgeous inside. I actually got transferred to this community not too long ago (got promoted) and I live in Plano now. I'm picky when it comes to apt. living, and I'm moving there myself at the end of February. Why don't you call me on Tuesday? I'm sure you'll love it! The office number is: 972-239-9923. p.s. I saw you found aptratings.com...look us up there too!

Flower Mound and Grapevine are very good choices. I live in Flower Mound, very low crime, lots of police.
Lani is right, there is no bad area in Flower Mound, the worst parts are the apartments LOL But I am not a snob LOL
