I think very late 90's, but Africans and South American Indians have long doing that since biblical days. Have you see the the lip people who put round boards which lips wrap around it to hold it to teeth. Or how about those long neck ladies with many rings aroung their neck. I certainly hope that does not become a trend here in North America as a fad.

I think it became popular among teens/early-20-somethings in the late 90s. In the midwest, anyway.

i think it started in africa with some tribesman
probably in ethiopia, before the arrival of europeans

well, we learned in our art and culture class, that they have been doing that since well, not the dawn of time, but for a while, back in Africa... i dont recall much of what my teacher said, but i could ask her foor you.
