Compressed Coal under tremendious pressure over millions of years, yes its possible natural diamonds will run out, but it wont happen in our lifetime, i believe we have used about 10% of known deposits.

Where diamonds come from, and what they are
made of have been covered adequately by other
answers. Since they can now be made artificially
they are not likely to run out, the raw material, carbon, is too common. Gem quality diamonds
are really not especially rare. Their price is kept
artificially inflated by the DeBeers diamond cartel.
I have read that the quantity of gem quality diamonds produced every year is at least ten times
the quantity needed to supply the market. The
advertising campaign is what accounts for the
ability of the cartel to keep the price so high for
such a relatively common item. The "Diamonds
are forever" slogan is, of course, false. Diamonds
can be chipped, crushed, discolored or burned.
Other gemstones are really rarer and more expensive than diamonds, as well as being, in most cases more attractive - rubies, sapphires and
emeralds, for example. Even with the diamond
price so artificially high the price of a ruby above a relatively small size, is higher than that of a diamond. This may be the same for sapphires, as
they are the same mineral as rubies, just colored
differently.

Diamonds are what happens when carbon is compressed and heated in extreme conditions. It is simply crystallized carbon. It is almost always found in what are called Kimberlite pipes. These are mineral deposits like big cylinders that sit in the earth. Find Kimberlite, you probably will find diamonds. The biggest diamond exporter in the world is South Africa, followed by Russia and then Canada. Diamonds can run out since there can only be a finite amount in the world but they can now make synthetic diamonds using a small real diamond as a seed to grow more diamonds. The vast majority of diamonds mined go to industrial uses, such as abrasives. Only a small percentage become gems.

I agree with the others their are plenty of diamonds they take a long time to form though. The methods of mining the diamond are very hard on the environment and cause lots of pollution, also in some places people are in slaved in diamond mines.

Diamonds a form of carbon, are formed under intense heat and pressure in the lower part of the crust or upper mantle. They come from rock types called Kimberlites or Lamprophires. If this rock is forced to near the surface it can be mined for diamonds.
Diamond will probably never run out, as they become scarcer more sophisticated detection methods will probably come about!?

diamonds will absolutley run out, the resources are not "readily available." We've already used up much of our planet's coal, and eventually we'll have to turn to other places for fuel. Diamonds are the result of thousands of years' compression though so, as people said, they will not run out for a long while. There will be a time though, when people suddenly stop finding them and they become more and more rare.

diamonds are common as mud. usable diamonds are less common. diamonds will never run out, as the ingredients and means to make more are readily available
