Do "trade paperbacks" ever start out as hardcover editions? For instance, I have never found a hardcover copy of "The Kite Runner". Thanks...

Trade paperbacks are usually the same size and layout as the hardcover editions of a book. Only the binding is different. They tend to have higher quality paper than the smaller paperback versions of a book. So, yes, they most often start out as hardcover editions. The Kite Runner appeared first in hardcover; you can still get the hardcover version at Amazon.ca.

Yes, I think they do in some cases. And even the ones that don't may be available later on in library editions that are no longer needed (some distributing companies sell them to bookstores or maybe on the Internet).

I checked at www.half.com for you and found the title "The Kite Runner" . You didn't list the author's name, but they have several 2003 hardcover editions available for sale. Some used, some new. Check over all of the ones listed, plus check out the rating on the seller before deciding which one to buy. I have bought from half.com before and have never had a problem. You may also want to check out www.amazon.com for available used copies in "like new" condition. They are also a good source. If you don't want to use your credit card over the Internet, most of the sellers will take a money order, just email the seller and ask.

Here's the link to half.com:
