I can only tell you that I have never seen a difference in the two manufactures as far as performance is concerned. When I last built a system I purchased the AMD top of the line from the last generation of chips and saved a bundle. My savings from the CPU went to more RAM and and a bigger hard drive. The CPU I purchased was a $900.00 chip when it came out and I paid less than 500 for it a year or so later.

The Intel Core 2 Duos are the best. Now they are clearly faster, so all the AMD people have decided to make up this idea that somehow AMDs are better for gaming, even though the Intels are faster. The Core 2 Duos are faster in everything, and in fact games are one of the areas where they have the biggest advantage. The E6600 should fit nicely into your price range. If you want evidence, browse through some of the links I listed.

The only chip to buy right now for that cash is the Intel core 2 Duo.
AMD used to be the best for gaming before, but not since the Core 2 Duo came in town.
If you can't go over 350$ USD go for this one ---> Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Dual Core
On special (269$) see link : http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=19143&vpn=BX80557E6400&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1008
If you can spare another 29$ then Really go for this one ---> Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core
On Special (379$) see link : http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=19144&vpn=BX80557E6600&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1008
From the 2 , I really would suggest the E6600 , since it has a 4 MB shared cache , double that of the E6400.
You will not regret it. trust me. And they also overclock like crazy with the right motherboard , example --> Asus P5B-E

umm well intell now with the dual cores
go for a e6600 intel
amd was the leader and is in single cores but dual core is where it is at i would suggest a e6400-$220 or a e6600- $320?? now the only real difference between these two other than price is that the e6600 has 4mb cache and the e6400 has only 2mb
but the graphics card makes the games the best yes cpu does help but mainly the graphics card.

If you're being money conscious, you should stick with AMD. Usually w/bang for the buck considered, you would probably not notice much of a difference with either maker. Go for what you can afford.
By the way, this would also be a good question to research on THG (link below) forums.

Intel prcessors are used for production type stuff. Music and photo editing. AMD processors are best for gaming stuff. Graphics. So it depends on what you wanna do with your computer.

INTEL (I think that because they are very fast and I have had very good luck and heard very good comments about them from other people. Even one of my friend's Dad likes Intel because he works at Microsoft)

Each performs well. Therefore, to me, the cheapest (AMD) is the best.
